9 February 2018, Shenzhen, China - ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a major international provider of telecommunications, enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet today announced  that  its expert Meng Wei, Director of Standards Planning at ZTE, was elected as Chairman of the Network Architecture Group (WG3) at the first meeting of the Focus Group on Machine Learning for Future Networks including 5G (FG-ML5G) held by the ITU Telecommunication Standardization Sector (ITU-T) in Geneva, Switzerland.

Mr. Meng Wei made a presentation on "AI Promoting Smart Network". It’s an important breakthrough in ZTE artificial intelligence standardization and will promote the rapid development of telecommunications artificial intelligence.

At present, machine learning and telecommunications technologies are increasingly integrated. Network design and management will be greatly enhanced by the application of machine learning. In response to this demand, the FG-ML5G held its first working conference to discuss machine learning requirements, scenarios and application cases, data formats and algorithms, as well as the impact and analysis of network architecture in future networks.

Representatives from leading operators and equipment manufacturers such as Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, KT, Telecom Italia, and other experts from institutes like China Telecom and Korea ETRI, participated in this meeting and submitted 20 proposals in total.

The meeting approved to set up three working groups to promote network intelligence. Among them, WG1 is the “application cases, services and requirements" group, with two chairmen from Korea Telecom and Vodafone; WG2 is the "data formats & ML technologies" group, with the chairman from Fraunhofer Institute of Communication Technology, Germany; WG3 is the "ML-aware network architecture" group, with the chairman being ZTE’s Meng Wei.

The second FG-ML5G meeting will be held in China from April 24 to April 27, 2018. Experts and entrepreneurs from the International Telecommunication Union, the German Fraunhofer Institute and the world's artificial intelligence and telecommunications fields will discuss the artificial intelligence application cases, requirements, data formats, machine learning techniques and the influence of machine learning technology on network architecture.
