Networks allow China Unicom to support next-generation data intensive multimedia applications

ZTE, a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, has announced it is to exclusively install three national-level 800G DWDM optical transmission networks. This represents the first time China Unicom has deployed an 800G national backbone network which is has a capacity of 800 gigabits per second (Gb/s), the equivalent of transmitting 10 million simultaneous phone calls every second.

"As 3G networks are deployed in China it is essential that the infrastructure can support the rise in multimedia and other bandwidth intensive applications," said Mr. Han Ling, VP of ZTE optical transmission marketing.  "This network will enable China Unicom to not only support future high-speed applications but also extend its network to more subscribers."

Under the terms of the agreement ZTE will provide its Unitrans DWDM family of products including the ZXWM M900 and its MSTP (Multi-Service Transport Platform), the ZXMP S390. DWDM technology (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) offers huge capacity, supporting multimedia applications such as mobile TV and high-speed internet access, by transmitting information on multiple optical wavelengths simultaneously.

The networks will cover five developed coastal provinces in China and connect to Hong Kong and Macao. This deployment will allow China Unicom to achieve its international strategy to develop an international interconnection with Hong Kong and Macao. As a result China Unicom will be able to expand its international footprint and target new markets.

This is the latest optical network win for ZTE, whose 180,000 sets of optical products have been deployed by over 130 carriers in over 70 nations and regions across Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, Africa and the Middle East. The total distance of ZTE磗 deployed optical networks is 230,000km which, if stretched end to end, would reach around the world 5.5 times. According to the research firm, OVUM-RHK, ZTE was the fastest growing optical network vendor between 2003 and 2005 and ZTE LH DWDM products rank among the top three in the world.
