ZTE teams up with China Mobile, Qualcomm and Sky Limit Entertainment to complete industry's first 5G-A multi-user concurrency XR competitive gaming services in large space

Shenzhen, China, 26 February 2024 - ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a global leading provider of information and communication technology solutions, has collaborated with China Mobile, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Sky Limit Entertainment to successfully verify multi-user concurrency XR services based on 5G-Advanced (5G-A) technology. The verification took place in the expansive environment of Sky Limit Entertainment’s SoReal Paradise, located in Shougang Park, Beijing. The results demonstrate backpack free XR service in nearly 1,000 square meters of space. The air interface latency is less than 10ms to guarantee a clear and smooth XR experience accommodating simultaneous access of 12 streams of XR services. This milestone validation heralds the imminent era of multi-device HD mobile XR experiences. 

The traditional local backpack rendering solutions face numerous challenges, including heavy weight, differential thermal dissipation, and short battery life of backpack devices for XR experiences. Additionally, Wi-Fi based wireless solutions encounter issues such as throughput restriction, signal jitters, and interference problems. These issues lead to unsatisfactory user experiences and impede the development of the XR industry. Given these challenges, there is an urgent need for an efficient, high-speed, low-latency wireless solution.

In this end-to-end verification, ZTE adopted the SuperMicell solution based on native AI to provide high-speed, low-latency 5G-A indoor network coverage and intelligent XR service assurance. This solution was paired with Qualcomm's test device powered by the Snapdragon® X75 5G Modem-RF System, along with all-in-one VR devices powered by the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 Platform. Clear pictures in gaming reached a high picture quality of 4K @90 fps, a mainstream level in the industry. For substantial data interactions occurring in multiplayer competitive gaming, local backpack-styled rendering was uploaded for cloud rendering in a backpack-free manner, with vast amounts of data carried on the 5G-A network. Thus, the network is required to offer robust high-bandwidth, low-latency capabilities and meet deterministic service assurance for tens of concurrent XR service streams. Additionally, this test validated ZTE's SuperMicell solution, improving service coverage and meeting the mobility needs of XR applications through joint intelligent beam management. The 5G-A XR service dedicated support solution ensures XR services' performance with slot-level intelligent scheduling and optimization policy, achieving an average air interface latency of less than 10ms. These joint verification results demonstrate that this end-to-end solution realizes a wireless XR experience in a large space and can support more than 50 XR users online simultaneously to tour the virtual world.
