ZTE Addresses Industry-wide Power Challenge

Date:2006-09-26 ZTE Click:189

ZTE Corporation, a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, announced at the "2006 Seminar on Deployment and Maintenance of Next Generation Wireless Base Stations" that its new power amplifiers with 30% efficiency will be used in a new generation of energy-saving UMTS base stations, leading to a 50% power consumption reduction in UMTS base stations.

Power consumption has long been an issue for mainstream base stations whose efficiency of power amplification is around 10-20%. Not only do they consume more electricity, but the heat they generate has led to their bulky shape. ZTE has responded to operator demand by independently developing a system based on the high efficiency Doherty PA and DPD linearity technologies. ZTE researchers achieved a major breakthrough in the relevant algorithm enabling the PA efficiency to exceed 30%. With the reduction of power consumption and heat, base stations can therefore become smaller in size and more efficient.

"The telecoms market is fiercely competitive and any technology that can significantly reduce operators costs can deliver powerful competitive advantages.  Any move to make base-stations more efficient as well as being more discrete and thereby merging subtly into the environment must be good news for the industry," said Fang Hui, general manager of ZTE磗 3G Products, "Take our B09 as an example. This new macro base station only consumes 800W of power, which is less than half of traditional macro base stations.  It can save more than 50% of the electricity bills for operators and dramatically reduce their network OPEX."

ZTE磗 new power amplifiers can be used to reduce operator OPEX in UMTS networks which have been installed in more than 10 countries including Tunisia, Nigeria and Tajikistan.
