While our athletes were fiercely competing at the 2004 Olympics, capturing a magnificent 32 gold medals for China, the ADSL broadband system constructed by ZTE Corporation for this great event was extremely successful, providing athletes, referees, journalists and spectators from all over the world with quality broadband services in 16 venues and news centers. This is an important moment for ZTE as the Chinese telecom equipment vendor proved itself on the Olympics stage.

As early as in May 2002, according to the managing director of ZTE´s representative office in Greece, ZTE had already started its contact with OTE (The Greek Telecommunications Organization) about the ADSL project for the 2004 Athens Olympics. On October 30, 2003, a contract was signed at OTE’s headquarters. The contract required ZTE to provide ADSL equipment and terminal MODEM for the 16 venues and news centers. This was the first time that a Chinese telecom equipment vendor served the Olympics and indicates that ZTE has won the first "Gold Medal" for Chinese enterprises in the construction of an Olympics telecom infrastructure.

"We knew that the performance of the equipment would become very sensitive during the Olympics as the number of users would grow steadily.  This meant that the equipment had to stand an even tougher test," said ZTE engineer, Mr. Jian Ouyang.

"To our great relief, ZTE´s equipment showed outstanding strength in the trial operation. The ADSL project was successfully put into application two weeks before the opening ceremony, covering the 16 venues and news centers as expected," added Mr Jian.

To protect ZTE´s ADSL transmission from risks, the ZTE Olympics Project Group made detailed plans and thoughtful preparations. The Olympics ADSL maintenance personnel were divided into two groups: one group manned the news center to ensure that important users had smooth network operation; the other group oversaw the ADSL network management center, guaranteeing a centralized maintenance and management for the equipment and systems at all sites. A 16-hour on-site maintenance and 24-hour hotline service was also available.

Good things come to those who wait!  A final statistic report from OTE shows that ZTE ADSL worked very well during the Olympics: in total only five users complained they had encountered half-minute disconnections during their work online.  This was at the very beginning of the network operation and was soon rectified. ZTE was always there for instant service and problems were usually solved within only five minutes.  Most of the problems were solved as soon as users called for help.

As the Olympics opened on August 14, the number of athletes, reporters and spectators in all venues increased suddenly. Some of the broadband equipment vendors had difficulties as their equipment suffered from repeated problems.  When this happened OTE made the prompt decision to connect the users who were having problems (from 28 sites) to ZTE´s system as ZTE´s ADSL was considered perfectly reliable.  No complaints were made after this.

The operation in the 16-day Olympic Games proved that ZTE equipment successfully stood the test of time. The data from OTE shows that there were no complaints from people using ZTE equipment. OTE confirmed that they were "very satisfied" with ZTE and, after the closing ceremony on August 30, a senior executive from OTE made a special call to Mr. Jian Ouyang to congratulate ZTE Corporation. He said that ZTE´s ADSL performance was unbelievably excellent!

ZTE ADSL, GALA!

The whole world is now looking at China with new eyes as the Chinese Athletics Delegation displayed outstanding ability and comprehensive competitive talents at the 2004 Athens Olympics. Success never comes singly but in pairs.  The perfect performance of ZTE´s ADSL equipment during the event also enabled our Greek partners to appreciate the quality of Chinese high-tech telecom products. They now think highly of ZTE Corporation and have congratulated us warmly. They expect to work in partnership with ZTE, in the hope of jointly exploiting the telecom market in the European Union.

ZTE engineer Mr. Jianfei Liu told us a story.  On August 22 Mr. Jianfei Liu was on his way back to his accommodation after his duty handover in the news center. He was passing by the tennis court when a sudden noise came from the court.  It was the two Chinese girls, Tian Tian Sun and Ting Li that had beaten the rivals with two sets to zero and won the first gold medal in China´s tennis history. Jianfei was so excited that he lost no time in taking photographs.  The maintenance engineer of OTE who was working at the tennis court congratulated Jianfei by raising his thumb and saying , "Chinese Girls, GALA! ZTE ADSL, GALA!" (Gala=Wonderful)

On August 27, when Chinese track man Xiang Liu won the first gold medal for the 110-hurdle race in Asian track and field history, another Greek telecom engineer said to ZTE´s engineer Mr. Yuduo He "China won so many gold medals. China is sure to be No.1 at the next Olympics in Beijing. ZTE´s equipment runs so well at the Olympics and it will also undoubtedly become No. 1 at the next Olympics."

The Olympics economy researcher pointed out that Chinese telecom equipment had had great success in its first appearance at the Olympics. This is really a historical breakthrough for the Chinese high-tech industry. ZTE´s beautiful performance at the Olympics will encourage more Chinese enterprises to compete for "Olympic Medals". In high-tech industries such as in IT and telecommunications, after years of striving, Chinese enterprises have become very competitive in the international market.  Using the Olympics to raise brand awareness is very valuable. It is believed that Chinese enterprises will perform even better for greater progress.

When concluding the ADSL project success at the 2004 Athens Olympics, Mr. Jian Ouyang said, "On the one hand, OTE, a multi-nation operator with prominent influence in Europe has already acknowledged ZTE´s equipment performance and network solutions very highly. On the other hand, in the two years of ADSL operation for the Olympics in Athens, our technical and engineering personnel´s diligent spirit and good devotion to customers has been widely recognized. These achievements will not only help pave a path for introducing more of ZTE products to Greece but also build up our confidence to capture more market share. "
