ZTE Releases Industry-First White Paper on Built-in Blade in OLT

19 February 2019, Shenzhen, China - ZTE Corporation (0763.HK / 000063.SZ), a major international provider of telecommunications, and enterprise and consumer technology solutions for the Mobile Internet, today released the industry’s first white paper on built-in blade in Optical Line Terminal (OLT). The white paper introduces three typical application scenarios as well as the value of the built-in blade in OLT.

The first scenario involves high-traffic and low-latency video services. Applications including access Content Delivery Network (CDN), video caching and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) acceleration are loaded onto the blade to take advantage of PON access’ high bandwidth, near-the-user service provision, low latency and low packet loss ratios. This mechanism saves upper-network bandwidth, reduces network overheads and improves the user experience of video services.

The second scenario focuses on Virtual Network Functions (VNFs), including virtual Set Top Box (vSTB), virtual ONU Management and Control Interface (vOMCI), virtual Residential Gateway (vRG), Broadband Network Gateway User plane (BNG-U) and virtual Firewall (vFW). In this scenario, the blade functions as the infrastructure carrying the NFVs, aimed to ensure network transmission performance and simplify QoS deployment without increasing the number of service routing hops.

The third scenario is Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), under which, the blade performs the functions of local caching and offloading, energy management, indoor positioning and navigation, and information service management as well, thereby ensuring network performance and QoS, and relieving pressure on the edge data centers.

On its flagship OLT platform, TITAN, ZTE adopts a built-in 300mm deep lightweight blade. The blades employ Intel® Xeon® D processors, based on Intel’s groundbreaking data center processor architecture.

By means of TITAN, operators can build a lightweight edge computing infrastructure that is low-cost, low-power and enables flexible combination of services without upgrading their access offices. The infrastructure provides high-traffic and low-latency services with storage, computing and other capabilities in Fixed-Mobile Convergence (FMC) scenarios, thereby greatly improving users’ perception of experience-sensitive services.

As a new-generation flagship optical access product, ZTE's TITAN OLT has been deployed in many countries including China, Mexico, Brazil and Italy.
