Orange is the most recent entrant in a market shared by two operators. With more than 560,000 active mobile customers and a market share of 51.2%, Orange Guinea Bissau reclaimed the leadership position in volume market share at the end of December 2015, and consolidated its leading position in the value market. Recently, ZTE Technologies interviewed Mouhamadou Moustapha NDAO, CTO of Orange Guinea Bissau. He shared with us Orange’s network development and strategy in Guinea Bissau, his thought on the SDM project, the criteria to select providers, and his priorities for the next few years.

What is the current status of Orange’s network development in Guinea Bissau?
Currently, there are two operators in Guinea Bissau: Orange and MTN. Orange has been the leader in Bissau’s telecom market since 2013.

What distinguishes Orange from other operators in Guinea Bissau?

I think there are four aspects. The first difference between Orange and other operators is the price. Orange just charges what the subscribers consume. Second, the customers in Bissau trust Orange brand. Third, Orange has introduced some offers that are dedicated to the enterprises and companies. At last, I can say that Orange launched the first 3G network in May 2015, and was also the first operator to launch 4G at the end of 2015 in Guinea Bissau.

Could you introduce to us Orange’s overall strategy in Guinea Bissau?

Orange’s overall strategy is to maintain its leadership in all of its market segments, provide more services for subscribers and enterprises, and have the best technologies, services and processes.

What are you focusing on in terms of the SDM project?

For the SDM project, we want to have the best provider. Currently, our SDM is supplied by Alcatel and Nokia. However, our SDM is very old, and we want to upgrade it. This is the reason why we have launched a request for proposal (RFP).

How do you select you partners?

Our goal is to select the best partners to help Orange Group develop its businesses. Partners should be referenced in the short list of Orange Group, and we choose the best one referenced from the Group.

What are your priorities for the next few years?

The first priority is to secure and improve the Orange Bissau network. Orange Bissau has many projects. As one site is not secure, we plan to deploy a disaster recovery site in the near future. The second priority is that we plan to provide more data services for customers.

How do you evaluate the performance of ZTE IN?

Honestly, I am very satisfied with ZTE IN. If any problem occurs, I’m comforted that ZTE’s experts will connect it remotely. Within 24 hours after the incident, we will receive a root cause analysis (RCA). I think the incident management of ZTE team is excellent. Our expectation for ZTE is to continue to be accessible and available for customers.
