Today, both services and networks are more and more IP-based. One of the challenges encountered during optical transport network development is how to cope with demands for data service growth. WDM technologies represent a unique opportunity to respond to increasing demand for bandwidth as they dramatically increase the capacity of optical networks.
Initially used as a mechanism to relieve fibre bottlenecks, WDM is developing towards delivering increased transmission distances and bit rates. On the other hand, it enables a system to be more agile and intelligent as increasing, and unpredictable, IP traffic compels services providers to move network intelligence to the optical layer.
The article "The New Era of WDM" investigates development trends in the WDM system. WDM can be enhanced by introducing the flexible, reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) technology and a generalised multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS) control plane.
