Concept of ZTE’s optical network development


Non-blocking and colossal cross-interaction matrix (grade of VC-4: 512×512; grade of wavelength: 256×256); restructurable electric and optical channels; cross-connection, adding/dropping and transmitting of any services (TDM, ATM and IP).


Reliable and flexible protective measures at the same time for the electric channel layer, the optical channel layer and the optical multiplexing segment layer (SubNet Connection Protection (SNCP), G.842 DNI, logic subnet protection, and virtual optical channel protection); protection of the optical channel layer and the multiplexing segment layer for links and loops.

Free from the restriction of the 10Gbit/s rate of a single wavelength, sustainable commercialized multi-wavelength rate (32, 40, 80, 160, 320……); infinite capacity expansion (80Gbit/s, 320Gbit/s, 800Gbit/s, 1.6Tbit/s,6.4Tbit/s……).

By inheriting the essence of the 3rd generation digital transmission products, ZTE Corporation has forged her Unitrans product series including SDH 10Gbit/s, DWDM 320Gbit/s, OADM, OXC, etc. with her brandnew concepts of SWS (Single Wavelength Solution), MWS (Multiple Wavelength Solution) and FWS (Free Wavelength Solution), thus laying a foundation for future optical transmission networks.

Among these, the OADM system, co-developed by ZTE Corporation and Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications, has been listed in the National High Technology Research and Development Program; the optical transmission system series is selected as one of the items in the China’s National Torch Program (a plan to develop high and new technologies); while ZXWM-32 DWDM optical transmission system was identified as one of the key national technical renovations in 1999.

With her optical transmission system series, ZTE provides total solutions for carriers all over the world. For backbone network, 320Gb/s or 80Gb/s DWDM systems including OADM and OXC are suggested, also, for some backbone where the traffic is not so heavy, 10Gb/s or 2.5Gb/s SDH/SONET system are still in need. In these backbone networks, GE, FE, POS, E1/T1, 155M/622M interfaces are provided by transmission systems to connect with ATM core switch, IP core router, Long Haul switch, or multimedia systems, etc. For metro/regional networks, 320Gb/s or 80Gb/s DWDM systems including OADM and OXC are suggested, especially re-configurable OADM is suggested for networks with heavy traffic of voice, data and multimedia. 10Gb/s or 2.5Gb/s SDH/SONET systems are also much in need. In these metro/regional networks, GE, FE, POS, E1/T1, 155M/622M interfaces are provided by transmission systems to connect with ATM edge switch, IP edge router, Local switch, or multimedia systems, etc. As to the access network, SDH/SONET systems of 2.5Gb/s, 622Mb/s, 155Mb/s and compact systems of 622Mb/s and 155Mb/s are especially useful.

Based on her products today, ZTE believes the optical communication still has brighter future. As far as the Single Wavelength Solution is concerned, after the 10Gb/s has been widely commercialized, the 40Gbps based on electric time division multiplexing is expected to be commercialized on backbones, and even optical solution and optical time division multiplexing systems will be commercialized after some key technologies are mature. As to Multiple Wavelength, 40 channels systems are widely deployed in networks, 160 channels systems (namely 1.6T system) have been commercialized already, which will be widely applied after the cost is reduced to acceptable range. Ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing also sees hope of commercialization with the progress of research and development of fiber optic components. ZTE believes the optical network will be free and intelligent eventually, so after the commercialization of re-configurable OADM, OXC is expected to be commercialized. More intelligent systems, adding an optical control layer with General Multi-Protocol Label Switching and Auto Switching Optical Network, perhaps will take this free and intelligent networking responsibility.

ZTE optical transmission products are applicable for national backbones, provincial backbones, metro networks, local networks, providing users with a whole package of transmission network solutions. Currently, ZTE optical transmission system products have been widely deployed in China, and have been put into application on a large scale in more than 10 countries and regions, including Pakistan, Ecuador, South Korea, Russia, Poland, Hong Kong, Zambia, Thailand, etc.
