ZTE Deploys the First 4G/WiMAX Network for ZAPP.PT in Portugal

11 November 2010, Shenzhen, ChinaZTE Corporation (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, has signed a €30 million contract to supply 3G/4G equipment and services to ZAPP.PT in Portugal, including WiMAX and CDMA2000 EV-DO Rev.B network equipment, core network equipment, and Services, which will provide high-speed broadband wireless services across Portugal.

 

ZAPP.PT is a group of telecommunications companies in Portugal trading under the ZAPP brand name, lead by mobiZAPP (formerly Radiomóvel Telecomunicações SA) and including Repart and Bravesensor as affiliates. ZAPP.PT owns and operates a nationwide 3G mobile network and offers wireless broadband services throughout mainland Portugal even in the more remote areas of the country. 

 

ZTE will provide ZAPP.PT with Uni-RAN mobile network equipment, Uni-Core core network equipment, and services to support the launch of the WiMAX 4G network over 3.5GHz frequencies with initial services being launched by mid-2011 across selected areas of the country, including Lisbon and Porto. ZTE will also upgrade ZAPP.PT's 450 MHz CDMA network to CMDA2000 Rev.B which will be the first EV-DO Rev.B commercial network in Europe, and install a state of the art IMS to provide VoIP services for WiMAX and EV-DO subscribers.

 

This supply contract is part of a wider partnership agreement signed today in the presence of the Chinese President Hu Jintao and the Portuguese Prime Minister José Socrates, during President Hu's state visit to Portugal.

 

ZTE WiMAX/CDMA products are based on its leading edge SDR platform and are a major part of the Uni-RAN solution. ZTE has built the largest 2.3GHz WiMAX commercial network in Southeast Asia with 196,000 subscribers. As of September 2010, ZTE had successfully rolled out 66 WiMAX networks in 43 countries. ZTE's equipment has been supplied to high-end markets such as the USA and Japan. In Spain, ZTE has recently supplied over 500 WiMAX base stations to Iberbanda, a Spanish broadband WiMAX operator. ZTE has also deployed CDMA 450MHz networks for European countries including Portugal, Czech Republic, Norway and Romania. ZTE is, at present, the leading provider of CDMA 450MHz network equipment in Europe.
