Dusseldorf, 4 March 2010 – The Chinese telecommunications provider ZTE has announced it is opening a test lab in the Dusseldorf Test & Innovation Centre. The company's objective is to expand its testing and research activities in Europe and establish itself in Dusseldorf for the longer term. The contract with the Test & Innovation Centre, which is operated by Vodafone Germany, was signed today at the CeBIT fair in Hanover.

Since 2005 ZTE Deutschland GmbH has had its German headquarters in Dusseldorf, at one of the main centres of the European telecommunications industry and close to its key partner Vodafone. Having successfully conducted tests in 2008 and 2009 on its leading Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology as well as leading-edge mobile phone technology in the Test & Innovation Centre, ZTE decided to set up a permanent local research lab in the same location. ZTE will benefit from the excellent test conditions, outstanding infrastructure and the good support which the Centre has to offer.

"In line with our strategy of building research and development capacity not only in China but also close to the markets we serve, the Dusseldorf site will become our third Europe base, besides Poitiers in France and Kista in Sweden," explains Michael Stückmann, COO of ZTE Vodafone Business Unit Germany. "The Dusseldorf research laboratory forms the technical base platform for all the activities we undertake for European network operators. From here we intend to continue developing broadband technology for the entire European market and support our clients in the implementation of new services," Stückmann goes on to say. ZTE is targeting not only network operators but also business customers.

The head of the Test & Innovation Centre, Jill Doppelfeld-Watson, welcomes this move from ZTE: "We have been collaborating with ZTE for many years. The company produces hardware which Vodafone markets under its own brand name. We are delighted by this deepening of the relationship. The contract we are signing today is another milestone on the road of our long-term partnership."
