Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards 2009 recognise ZTE’s leadership in handset and infrastructure markets

17th June 2009, London –ZTE Corporation has won two awards during the Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards 2009. The awards are selected and awarded by Global Telecoms Business magazine and recognise the major corporations that have helped shape the telecoms industry over the last 12 months.

The Solar charging innovationaward honoursZTE’s project with the Caribbean operator Digicel. The second award, in theNational mobile services innovationcategory, recognises ZTE’s HSPA+ network for Hong Kong operator CSL, a subsidiary of mobile operator Telstra.

Through its partnership with Digicel, the largest operator in the Caribbean, ZTE manufactured the Coral-200-Solar which is the world’s first solar powered handset for emerging markets. The phone is now available wherever Digicel provides cellular network and can be fully powered by the sun or electricity wherever available.

CSL’s Hong Kong network, built by ZTE, is the world’s first HSPA+ network based on Software Defined Radio (SDR) technology. ZTE implemented over 2,000 basestations within 11 months, enabling the commercial launch of the network in March this year. The network has already allowed 400,000 subscribers to experience high speed wireless services with a download rate of up to 21 Mbps.

ZTE’s
SDR technology allowed the operator to upgrade the network without causing any disruptions to existing services, as the platform being used supports multiple standards and has a re-configuration function. Traditionally, the roll-out of a next generation network would require an operator to run two networks - the flexibility of SDR technology reduces significantly the difficulties of upgrading to HSPA+ or LTE.

“We are delighted to have won these prestigious industry awards in association with CSL and Digicel from such an esteemed panel of judges. The awards give great support to our position as a network vendor and handset manufacturer and spur on the benchmark technology that we have been able to bring to consumers through our successful partnerships with leading network operators,” said Mr zZhu Xiaodong, CTO of ZTE West Europe.

The GTB Innovation Awards are now in their third year and are designed to honour innovative projects involving telecoms operators and service providers around the world, in association with their vendors and suppliers. The awards ceremony took place at the London Park Lane Sheraton Hotel in the evening of June 16th and attracted around 300 guests.

ZTE has implemented 100,000 SDR base stations worldwide, including large scale networks in Hong Kong, Romania, Estonia, Turkey and mainland China. ZTE’s SDR solution is also the technology of choice of top 10 global WCDMA telecom carriers. Previously, ZTE earned the InfoVision Award for its SDR technology at the 2008 Broadband World Forum in Europe. It has also been shortlisted for the Best Network Technology Advance Award at the 2009 Global Mobile Awards for its cutting-edge SDR solution.
