ZTE Corporation of China, a global mainstream telecommunications infrastructure supplier, today announced that sales of its GSM equipment have topped 35 million lines worldwide – with systems deployed in more than 20 countries.

ZTE´s GSM growth has followed major wins in India, Zambia, Sri Lanka and other potential markets with large populations. In Zambia, ZTE is constructing the first national GSM network. In Pakistan, ZTE has beaten other rivals to win a large-scale turnkey project and in India, ZTE Mobile equipment has already topped one million lines.

These successes follow major international projects in Nigeria, Ethiopia and Russia, while at home in China, ZTE has its GSM equipment in all Chinese provinces and has also become one of the largest suppliers of short message equipment – with total processing ability now topping 9600 messages per second. In Shanghai, China´s biggest city, ZTE has provided a SC(Short Message Center) system for Shanghai Mobile, which is now the largest SC in the world.

"Our competitors are active in China and overseas, but I believe that ZTE can hold its own because our products have reached a level to compete with them in terms of quality and services, and we can offer local operations with total solutions," said Ye Weiming, Vice President and General Manager, Mobile Division.

To date, ZTE is the one of few wireless vendors anywhere in the world that can provide a total range of GSM/ CDMA(Code Division Multiple Access) / PHS(Personal Handset System)products to operators, whereas its competitors are generally restricted to only one or two types. ZTE´s differential GSM WLL(Wireless Local Loop), GPRS( General Packet Radio System) solutions have won high praise from operators in Peru and Chile and the company´s in-depth cooperation with multinational carriers such as Spanish Telecom, Portuguese Telecom, MIC and Telefonica is also progressing well.

"We attribute our market success especially to our strong R&D capability," said Ye. "We´re paying much attention to next-generation technology, for example, we established an R&D centre in Sweden that is engaged in 3G technology and we have set up over 10 field trials and pilots to convince operators of the advantage of our UMTS(Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) products."

In 2003, ZTE launched its BTS( Base Transceiver System) and got large scale application in the world, which is highly integrated (12TRX/RACK) and supports dual bands. ZTE´s self-developed GSM version that supports migration from 2G to 3G has won excellent achievements in MTNET(Digital Mobile Communication Simulation Testing Network) test organized by MII (Ministry of Information Industry). ZTE has already completed its GSM solutions for 850M, 900M, 1800M, 1900M and EGSM(Extended Globle System for Mobile Communications). ZTE is also developing 2.75G Edge, half rate and AMR(Adaptive Multi-rate) products, which support a migration from GSM, GPRS and EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution)to UMTS.
