ZTE Corporation, a leading global provider of telecommunications equipment and network solutions, today announced that it has been awarded a contract by major Colombian fixed-line operator Emcali, to provide a GSM-based WLL (wireless local loop) network in Cali, Colombia´s second largest city.

The new WLL network is to operate in the 1900MHZ spectrum using ZTE´s field-proven ZXG10-MSS and ZXG10-BSS products. Upon completion, the network will cover 90 percent of Cali´s population offering voice and GPRS data services.

This news follows an agreement reached last year when ZTE upgraded Cali´s core network with its fixed-line 3G solution enabling such services as IPTV.

"The telecoms market in Colombia is both highly-developed and fiercely competitive," said Mr. Wang Shouchen, General Director of ZTE in South America, "Local operators are increasingly demanding when it comes to vendor product performance, technical support, engineering capability and future upgrade paths. Only the most competitive stand a chance."

"Emcali is pleased to choose ZTE as a partner to continuously improve and enrich our various services for a large number of local customers. We are convinced that ZTE´s mature WLL solutions and operational experience can ensure project success," said Emcali´s project manager. "We are especially pleased with ZTE´s product performance and strong technical support," he emphasised.

ZTE´s WLL solutions are widely deployed around the world as an alternative method of "last-mile" access. From Pakistan to Algeria and Mali, ZTE´s WLL solutions are providing coverage to the most remote places on earth due to ease of construction combined with low cost. ZTE´s WLL solutions feature high reliability, full compatibility with existing technology and are future-proofed for investment protection.
