Shenzhen SDH R&D Institute

Profile

Since it was founded in 1998, Shenzhen SDH R&D Institute of ZTE Corporation has become one of the three strategic core businesses of ZTE. The sales volume of transmission product increased from 230 million in 1998 to 2100 million in 2002, a startling increase of more than 800%. ZTE has become one of the major transmission product suppliers.

Manpower

Up to now, more than 1500 personnel are engaged in the research and development of optical transmission products in Shenzhen SDH R&D Institute. About a hundred of them hold PhDs and postdoctoral degrees, 70% of them hold master’s degrees or above, and 90% of the total have bachelor’s degrees. The average age of this group is only 27.

In Shenzhen SDH R&D Institute, a group of world-class scholars and experts are engaged in the R&D of the leading-edge technologies of optical communications, taking part in both national and international organizations, and keeping up with international telecommunications standards. For example, ZTE is the participator of ITU-T SG-15 and SG-4 standards; participator of the RPR alliance; one of the original drafters of China DWDM standards etc.

Shenzhen SDH R&D Institute is responsible for developing and producing SDH transmission equipment. Up to now, the transmission rate of single-wavelength commercial products has broken through 10G, and the research result at laboratory level has reached 40G.

Market advantages

Since 2001, ZTE optical transport products have been successively applied in the national trunks of famous chinese carriers, such as China Telecom, China Mobile, China Unicom, China Railcom, CNC, etc. and private networks of electricity and petrol. ZTE ranks No.1 in the application of national first-class trunk.

In the international markets, ZTE optical transport products have reached Russia, Poland, Ecuador, Mexico, Thailand, Algeria etc.; and been applied in the national trunks of Ecuador, India, Poland, etc. So far, there are approximately 100,000 terminals of ZTE optical transport equipment running on networks of operators around the world.

Beijing DWDM and Optical Network R&D Institute

Beijing DWDM and Optical Network R&D Institute was founded in November 1998. It now has over 100 personnel holding PhD degree, master’s degree or bachelor’s degree. The number of those who have master’s degree or above occupies over 70% of the total personnel.

Beijing R&D Institute is engaged in the all-optical network research. At present, it has two major products: ZXWM-32 DWDM optical transmission system and ZXMP M800 large-capacity Metro optical transmission system. ZXWM-32 offers a maximum of 160 wavelengths, and its transmission capacity reaches 1.6Tb/s, which can be configured flexibly according to users’ requirements, offering different capacities ranging from 10G, 20G, 40G, 80G, 400G and even to 1.6Tb/s. By using optical amplifier, the maximum transmission distance without O-E-O conversion is 640km. When using Raman amplifier, the maximum transmission distance is 2000km, which is a leading technology worldwide.

ZXMP M800 is another super powerful OADM product suitable for Metro Network. In addition to the merits of DWDM products, it perfects the protection function of optical layer. In terms of system architecture, it employs the modular expansion technology, reserving wide space for future expansion.

Now, Beijing R&D Institute has launched the research work on all-optical network products. It joint hands with other units in the state “863 Plan”, a science and technology project in China, to develop OADM and OXC system. It established a joint laboratory with the Beijing Post & Telecommunications University, engaged in the research and development of optical modules. In addition, it also accumulated abundant experience in the OTDM, Soliton, and ASON areas.

IC R&D Institute

Engrossed in development, design and research of communication chips, the Microelectronics Research Institute of ZTE Corporation attracts over 200 outstanding R&D talents. After nearly 6 years of endeavor in technology innovation, the Institute has mastered in Top-Down design methodology and owned deep submicron design capability. The Institute has successfully designed dozens of special-purpose large-scale chips applied in fields such as switching systems, optical transmission, data communications, mobile communications, etc. The Institute owns independent IPR over its chips with a variety of patent technologies. All the chips have been applied in large scale on switching equipment, optical communication equipment, data communication equipment and mobile communication equipment of ZTE Corporation. Institute has created good economic and social benefits for ZTE Corporation with its high performance, low power consumption and high integration chips. To master core technologies, to own independent IPR over its products, and to promote the national IC industry, that is the goal of the Institute.

Wuxi Zhongxing Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd.

Wuxi Zhongxing Optoelectronics Technology Co., Ltd. (WXZTE) was incorporated in January 2000 by Shenzhen Zhongxing Telecom Co.,Ltd. (ZTE). WXZTE designs, manufactures and markets advanced fiberoptic components for optical telecommunication industries. The company has leading expertise in the areas of erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs), fiberoptic components and subsystem products. The company has established a world-class high volume EDFA production Line with advanced testing facility. Current products include EDFAs for CATV and SDH applications, C-band, L- band and C+L- band EDFAs for WDM applications, broadband amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source , fiber Raman amplified module (FRA), and electrical variable optical attenuator (EVOA).

ZTE Dallas

ZTE Dallas, a R&D center of ZTE optical transmission product division, was formed in October 2001 in Richardson, Texas, USA.

Richardson, Texas, well known as “Telecom Corridor” in US, is one of the most significant and unique high tech business concentrations in the United States. The area has accumulated about 500 high tech companies which were primarily involved in the telecommunications industries, including service providers, system and component vendors from US and other countries.

ZTE Dallas has recruited key members with an average 18 years telecommunication industry experience from tier one system vendors in US and Canada. It brings expertise on system architecture, network management, and high speed hardware design. The team has been tasked for high level system design, standard participation and Northern American product marketing.

ZTE Dallas office occupies 3000 square feet area with a demo room and a testing lab. It is one of three R&D centers of ZTE in USA. The other two are CDMA R&D center in San Diego, CA and softswitch R&D center in New Jersey. All three centers are important parts of ZTE strategy on globalization.
